Concept of Urban Forest

The concept of urban forest is to create a very dense cover of forest on a barren piece of land in an urban setting. The urban forest acts as unique ecosystem that provides an array of benefits. In an urban forest native species are planted, no pesticides or fertilizers are used and watering is required only for the initial years.

An urban forest can be created using the Miyawaki Method, invented by Dr. Akira Miyawaki in Yokohama, Japan in the 1970s. In the conventional planting technique, 1 tree is planted in an area of 10m2 while the Miyawaki Method advocates 30 trees planted in an area of 10m2.

Benefits of Urban Forest

Urban forests grow 10 times faster than conventional plantation, 100 times more bio-diverse and have 30 times more green surface area. Entire development process is 100% organic with no addition of chemicals and pesticides. They retain water, thus assist in recharging the ground water table. They attract more birds and insects, produce native fruits and improve air quality. They occupy empty spaces in an urban area, have 30 times more CO2 absorption capacity and 30 times better noise, and dust reduction ability, than the conventional tree plantation. After two years of plantation, it becomes self-sufficient and does not depend on any external maintenance i.e. they become selfsustaining
